It happens to the most vulnerable among us – we’re talking elder abuse, which unfortunately, is on the rise – rates worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic and our aging population. Abuse can occur in facilities and at home. It does not discriminate. What is elder abuse? What are the signs, and why is it happening? And you might be surprised to learn who’s abusing older people the most. We should all be concerned.
June is National Elder Abuse Awareness Month. But it’s a subject matter that needs to be discussed and monitored throughout the year, perhaps daily. And that’s where the National Council on Aging, and its advocacy work comes in. For insight into this serious issue, we spoke to Genevieve Waterman, Director of Economic & Financial Security, at the National Council on Aging. ‘She shares so much great information!

BIO: Genevieve Waterman Director, Economic & Financial Security National Council on Aging
Genevieve Waterman leads the strategic vision of the National Council on Aging’s (NCOA) Age Well Planner, a digital tool that guides individuals through key decisions designed to make their money last longer and address health care needs.
During her tenure at NCOA, Waterman has led innovative programs to help low-income older adults create customized plans to achieve financial security and curriculums that educate older adults to avoid scams and financial exploitation.
Waterman holds a Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. She also holds a Master of Aging Services Management from the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology and a Master of Applied Gerontology from Towson University’s Center for Productive Aging.
